After having coached for more than 2000 hours and having completed several coach trainings, I came across The HeART of Laser-Focused Coaching: A Revolutionary Approach to Masterful Coaching, by Marion Franklin.
In my opinion, this has by far been the best book written on how to be a masterful coach and I recommend it to all those who are on their journey of becoming a coach or even leaders . Marion breaks down the process of being a coach in such simple words that every time you read this book and go into a coaching session, you will feel like you are a master coach already!
Her advice to coaches on being like a “cameraman who is on a helicopter and watching what’s happening below” is such a powerful analogy, that as a coach it just pulls you out of the story which our client may be telling us and we can constantly stay in a detached zone observing everything else about our clients except the details. And that’s where the magic happens.
This analogy proves invaluable to us coaches – we find ourselves observing so many details like the client’s body language, their tone, words, breathing, the emphasis on specific words; the eye movements, the pitch, the tone being modulated everytime there is a strong emotion, the belief and assumption patterns. I thought that ‘being on a helicopter’ and watching the client; dancing with them without being with them – is a powerful way to get them to move forward and help them gain immense self awareness.
I strongly recommend this read for every leader and coach; and encourage everyone to practice those skills.
