The Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM-III) is a trusted test of individual cognitive ability. It’s a brief 40-minute assessment consisting of visual items that focus on evaluating cognitive abilities in unsupervised settings.
Raven’s is published by Pearson. Strategic partnership between Hogan and Pearson allows us to provide the assessment to our clients bundled with other Hogan Personality Assessments.
At ThreeFish, we use it to inform our Selection Consulting when we are helping clients assess candidates for key positions in Mid-Senior Leadership roles.
Raven’s APM-III primarily assesses candidates’ ability to solve novel problems, learn new skills, deal with complex information in unfamiliar situations, and understand problems in broader contexts.
The test provides valuable insights into an individual’s capacity for critical thinking across various dimensions including – ability to perform unfamiliar tasks, capacity to navigate through ambiguity, making sense of complex and uncertain situations, and decision making in complex situations,
Because the assessment is non-verbal, it can be used with individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Item banks are used to prevent item repetition among test takers, guaranteeing that each individual receives a distinct set of items and avoiding any potential biases. There are 4 norm groups for comparison – Individual Contributor, Manager, Director & Executive. This helps with placing individual performance in a meaningful context.
