HBRI : Using Quantitative and Qualitative Reasoning to Predict Occupational Success

The Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory (HBRI) evaluates people’s ability to solve complex problems, and these solutions then often drive decision making. Typically as leadership seniority increases, so does the scope of the role and the impact of decisions. By assessing reasoning style, you can understand a candidate’s approach to problem-solving and capacity for new information, and identify areas for development.

The HBRI is based on evolutionary psychology. Within this context, intelligence is the ability to reflect on one’s past actions, determine where the problems have occurred, and then devise methods to avoid repeating those problems in the future. Individual differences in this cognitive capacity enhance performance in every significant domain of human action.

The HBRI evaluates two kinds of problem- solving:

  • Qualitative Reasoning, which involves working with data visualization, logic, and verbal information to solve problems
  • Quantitative Reasoning, which involves working with mathematical and spatial information to evaluate and solve problems.

Considering these two reasoning styles in tandem gives us a clear sense of how participants solve problems. The HBRI is the first measure of reasoning ability based on a theory of intelligence and designed exclusively to predict real-world performance.

Why should you use the HBRI?

  • The HBRI measures both tactical and strategic reasoning
  • Can be used for both candidate selection and career or leadership development purposes
  • Driven by a 24-item measure of business reasoning
  • Norms are based on samples of working adults from around the globe
