The One Podcast Episode Every Leader (And Coach) Needs to Hear

There are moments when you encounter something that makes you stop and think: this is exactly what I needed to hear. This conversation between Mel Robbins and James Clear was that moment for me. If you could only listen to one podcast episode this year, one that cuts through the noise on personal transformation, make it this one. Clear is the bestselling author of Atomic Habits, and he has himself endorsed this particular episode as one of his favourites. He doesn’t just repackage what he has already written. He shares perspectives he has never put into print. As someone passionate about change and transformation, both as an individual and as a coach, here are the three ideas that inspired me the most.

1. The Only Two Time Horizons That Matter: 10 Years and 1 Hour
Clear argues that the two timeframes deserving our full attention are ten years and one hour. Ten years is shorthand for the big, meaningful things we truly care about, our long-term vision. One hour is what we can do right now that contributes toward it. And this reframe stayed with me long after the episode ended – procrastinating on something important is choosing to delay a better future.

2. Change With the Seasons And Give Ourselves Permission to Do So
We are different at 20 than we are at 40. Life makes different demands on us at different points in time, and we need to show up differently in response. Clear describes how his own habits have evolved across the seasons of his career – two articles per week for three years, then three years of writing his book, and now a weekly newsletter. Not because he lost discipline, but because his context changed. The habits that carried us to where we are may not be the ones that carry us forward. Giving ourselves permission to evolve and change is wisdom.

3. The Alien Test: Your Actions Are the Truth
Imagine an alien follows us through our day. It cannot understand language. It cannot read our intentions. It can only observe what we actually do. What would it conclude are our priorities? This is one of the most elegant self-auditing tools I have come across. It cuts through the gap between intention and behaviour with quiet precision. For coaches like us, it is a ready-to-use reflection prompt that helps clients see themselves clearly, often for the first time.

This episode has stayed with me the way the best conversations do. Not because it gave me answers, but because it asked better questions. I hope it does the same for you.
