When I received my first Hogan Assessment results in 2017, my initial reaction was disbelief. Low scores on several HPI scales. A few red flags on the HDS. How could that be accurate?
The debrief changed everything. My coach helped me see that every score carries both a strength and a development opportunity. Not all high scores are desirable. Not all low scores are deficits. And most critically – no individual can be reduced to their scores.
My low Adjustment score troubled me most. I had associated low Adjustment with chronic self-criticism, anxiety, and self-doubt. Despite knowing the theoretical upsides – responsiveness to feedback, humility, risk awareness – I struggled to accept this part of myself. That is where the real work began.
At ThreeFish, I immersed myself in candid coaching conversations about leveraging strengths and embracing personality as neutral territory – neither good nor bad. I learned to stop judging myself and simply observe. I am on Path A. Others are on Path B or C. The destination is the same. We just navigate differently.
This shift from judgment to acceptance was not passive. It required continuous effort – reframing my internal dialogue, resisting the urge to label behaviours as wrong, and giving myself permission to operate differently from others. My Hogan Certification deepened this practice, helping me interpret my full profile holistically. I stopped tagging traits as problems and started seeing them as data.
Six years later, I retook the assessment. My Adjustment score had moved from low to high – while other scales remained stable. That single change told me everything. It was evidence of a profound internal transformation. I had truly learned to be at peace with myself. And that peace became the foundation for everything else.
Professionally, the shifts have been equally tangible. My low Sociability paired with high Altruism once felt like a contradiction. Now I embrace it. I do not need to network endlessly to be of service. I help people deeply – but within structures that suit me, like ThreeFish’s science-backed, judgment-free coaching programs.
My high Inquisitive and Learning Approach scores, supported by a moderate Prudence score, have made me a rigorous practitioner. I prioritise logical, data-backed solutions in leadership assessment. I struggle occasionally with prioritisation – but that same trait keeps me open to change, innovation, and better ways of working.
I have not arrived at a final destination. I am flowing like a river – ready for the next insight, the next version of myself. But the foundation is solid. And it was built one Hogan scale at a time.
