When I think about my Hogan journey, these famous words of Viktor E Frankl from his book Man’s Search for Meaning resonate with me – “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
My leadership journey has been all about doing things differently and trying to become a better version of myself. So, having started my journey in the corporate sector, and then spending a decade in the education sector, I was back to thinking, what next? And, following my intuition and an openness to plunge into the unknown, I stepped into consulting. I knew that in ‘doing’, a new ‘being’ would emerge.
My Hogan Jourmey began with the Hogan Certification, as it does for many of us. Bias for action, openness to experimentation and enthusiasm to take a plunge into the unfamiliar, got me applying Hogan in leadership development and coaching for clients. This also helped me build acceptance of my own scales. Reflecting on this part of my journey I can see Learning approach, Ambition, Prudence and Inquisitive supporting in driving action and creating new learnings and insights for myself and the business. Knowing my derailers has also been very helpful. High Reserved explained my brevity and sharpness that at times shows up as curtness. I noticed my inability to say no was seen as cooperation and High Leisurely helped me understand that if I’ve not disagreed, then I best follow-through with commitment..
Awareness turned into choice making, as I created a visualization and built awareness of my Future Self. Embracing my scales set me free – free to make situationally appropriate behavioral choices.
Rumi says this more beautifully – When you let go of who you are, you become who you might be. And now I feel I am truly free.
