When my wife says “Your father never listens to feedback,” my two grown up sons say, “Tell us something we don’t know…” By now you would have already guessed my Adjustment score. I’ll attribute my Hogan story like my coaching journey to – serendipity.
One of my friends approached me in 2016 and said that he along with another colleague are going to attend the Hogan Certification Workshop. Immediately, my high Learning Approach kicked in and I said YES without having any second thoughts. I thoroughly enjoyed the two and a half days of the workshop in Bangalore. Incidentally, I also came to know that Dr. Pradnya Parasher was also doing her graduate studies in Florida, when I was in graduate school. The bonus of attending the workshop was the friendship and association with ThreeFish from that time onwards.
When I received Hogan feedback, my first realization was that my strategic self – awareness would have been much higher had I taken the Hogan Assessment earlier in my corporate career. Hogan makes you to take a hard look at yourself – and this really helped me to be a better coach, consultant and above all, a better human being.
When I was on my own as a consultant, I needed to dial up my networking (with low Sociability and low Affiliation) and reach out to people with whom I have never interacted in my life before. Of course, my high Interpersonal Sensitivity helped me to be an empathetic listener and, in that process, helped me to become a better coach. Also, I realized why I was conflict averse in my corporate career – this insight would have helped me to be more effective, had I known it before. My high Altruistic and high Interpersonal Sensitivity serve me well as a coach and as a skilled helper.
With moderate Ambition and high Power, I’m able to nudge my coachees to become a better version of themselves and discover/actualize their hidden potential. I’m more aware of my derailers and this has helped me to be more trusting and less passive aggressive under stress.
As the Chinese say “A thousand – mile journey starts with a single step”. My next leg of a new thousand mile journey has already begun, with the awareness created by Hogan.
